I’m going to be making a presentation on May 27th that will explore how insights from Pope John Paul II might be applied to the world of entertainment, and, in particular, cinema.

THE GOSPEL OF THE BODY IN HOLLYWOOD

What: Clayton Emmer will be giving a talk on Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, and how the insights of the Pope might have an impact on Hollywood and cinema. After giving a brief overview of what the Theology of the Body is, he will attempt to apply several of the themes to the entertainment industry, and cinema in particular. What makes a person truly human? How can the characters portrayed in cinema show forth the true dignity of the person – as good, fallen and called to beatitude? How might films portray the human body as beautiful, but avoid exploitation of the body and violation of the audience? He will be showing scenes from several movies – including Big Fish, Shadowlands, The Passion of the Christ and Lost in Translation – as they relate to themes in Theology of the Body.
There will be time for Q&A and discussion following the talk. Please feel free to invite friends you think might be interested.
Clayton Emmer, a web designer and aspiring screenwriter living in Studio City, California, is a 2002 graduate of the Act One: Writing for Hollywood program. He has a Bachelor of Arts in English and has nearly completed the requirements for a Master of Divinity degree.
