{"id":7622,"date":"2026-02-18T10:37:33","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T16:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doxaweb.com\/blog\/?p=7622"},"modified":"2026-02-18T19:30:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T01:30:06","slug":"stations-of-the-cross-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doxaweb.com\/blog\/2026\/02\/18\/stations-of-the-cross-2\/","title":{"rendered":"stations of the cross"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">Today, I&#8217;m posting a special podcast episode on The Stations of the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-12468098\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/996733\/episodes\/12468098-stations-of-the-cross.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-12468098&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sometimes referred to as the Way of the Cross, or Via Crucis, the Stations of the Cross is an ancient devotion in Christianity. The practice of meditating on the last hours of the life of Jesus initially took place only in Jerusalem along the actual path Jesus trod through the city. This path is called the Sorrowful Way (or Via Dolorosa). Even today Christians walk this path, meditating on the passion of Jesus the Christ. The place of each meditation is called a station\u2014hence the name Stations of the Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Today, in most Catholic churches, you will find artwork depicting each of the fourteen stations, and during Lent, Catholics gather at church to meditate on the Stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Among the central themes&nbsp; is the atonement won for us by the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. Writers, visual artists, and musicians have depicted these stations in a multitude of ways over the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While C.S. Lewis did not compose meditations for the Stations of the Cross, he did meditate on Christ&#8217;s atonement\u2014and our participation in it\u2014in his book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/fourloves01lewi\/page\/n5\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Four Loves<\/strong><\/a><\/em>. An <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cct.biola.edu\/god-so-loved-cs-lewiss-four-loves-and-doctrine-christs-atonement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essay by Adam Johnson<\/a><\/strong> illuminates the connection this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">What does Christ\u2019s atonement have to do with love? It is an act of love, wherein the beloved spurns the lover. But beyond this, on the other side of the spurning, sacrifice, and death, lies the power of the resurrection: the power of an unquenchable Charity so jealous for his beloved that he will transform her, nurturing and perfecting every affection, every friendship, every element of eros within her, by imparting to her a share in his own Divine Charity. For only as such can she endure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><em>Only those into which Love Himself has entered will ascend to Love Himself.
