(Hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/amywelborn.typepad.com\/openbook\/2005\/10\/into_that_good_.html\"><strong>Amy<\/strong><\/a>.) So much of what he says resonates with my experience of being present at my dad&#8217;s deathbed just over a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/doxaweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/laidtorest.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5924\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our culture, and particularly the Los Angeles culture in which I attempt to survive, makes deafening demands to think constantly about youthfulness and physical health. It&#8217;s a culture that is very afraid of aging, disease and death \u2013 as if these were the worst things that could happen to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But some experiences make it clear that death can be beautiful\u2026 awe-inspiring, even\u2026 when viewed through eyes of faith. Our fear of death betrays a vision of life that is too narrow, too constricted, too suffocating\u2026 one that behaves as if this life is all there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our priorities are, so often times, the inverse of what they ought to be. We are afraid of dying, but not of sinning.
