While attending the Franciscan University of Steubenville<\/strong><\/a>, I had the privilege of spending an entire semester studying and traveling in Europe. The spring of 1992 was the second semester of the inaugural year of the study-abroad program based in Gaming, Austria<\/a><\/strong>, at a thirteenth century Carthusian monastery in the foothills of the Austrian Alps. It was an unforgettable four months.

\nThe Kartause in Gaming, Austria<\/a><\/strong>: the monastery where we lived, studied and prayed<\/em>
\nAt the end of the semester, I made this entry in my journal:<\/p>\n

Thursday, April 30th, 1992
\nThere are only dim echoes in the Kartause today.
\nThe rain lands gently
\nupon thirsty buds,
\nwhile the whole house sleeps
\nafter a busy semester of life with family.
\nMany brothers and sisters left this morning;
\n“goodbye,” we said,
\nlike we’d say any weekend,
\nconditioned for their prompt return.
\nBut our time in Gaming is finished now.
\nThey return to their homes and their lives —
\nmany we may see again,
\nbut never again will we walk the same paths
\nso closely and for so long…
\nIt gives me a deeper hunger for heaven;
\nafter all, this is a foretaste and a portion
\nof the family we will meet there…
\nMy brothers and sisters:
\nwe whistled a tune together while we we here,
\na beautiful tune.
\nI want to whistle it often
\nso that I may always remember.
\nBut I know that Brother Time has his ways —
\nand a day will come when I whistle that tune no more.
\nI will remember its beauty,
\nbut it will be impossible to return to whistling it.
\nI must wait for heaven to whistle it again.
\nIt is a song we whistled and sang:
\nWe sang it at the noon hour,
\nwhen the bells rejoiced before the breaking of the bread.
\nWe sang it in the evening,
\nwhen we joined together to adore our Eucharistic Lord.
\nWe sang it as we traveled to Rome and Assisi,
\nin the churches and especially on the castle-crowned mountain in Assisi,
\nwhere the fire sparked joyfully before our song.
\nWe sang it in our daily activities,
\nour daily drawing together —
\nour daily growth.
\nThe song we sang may never again touch our lips in this world,
\nbut it will be forever engraved on our hearts:
\nthe song of our life in the Kartause.
