\nFirst light
\nashen grey —
\ntravel alarms stoke the coals
\nand the first sparks emerge,
\nbuy tickets and descend spiral stairs
\nto the electric pipe with its capsules,
\nand are swallowed through the London earth.
\nWe are leaving London.
\nSoon we emerge from under.
\nWe see the streets darkly,
\nand the yellow electric torches
\nin the neighborhoods,
\nas they rush past us
\non their way
\nto where they are.
\nWe sit still,
\nstaying in order to arrive elsewhere,
\nfar elsewhere
\nthrough the air elsewhere.
\nWe sit, and few talk
\nas the tracks pound an echoed rhythm
\ndown the tube cars:
\n“we move, you move,
\nwe move, you move,”
\nsays the rhythm-track.
\nDimness fades into suburbs
\nin South Ealing
\nand the pealing
\nof imaginary bells
\ntells us it is morning.
\nAnd in the morning we will fly,
\nfly elsewhere,
\nto land,
\nstill on Time’s underground
\nand we will stay on it
\nuntil we arrive at the tube stop of Eternity.
\nPeople will ride with us for a while,
\nthen alight and make connections
\nwith another tube —
\nyet all will arrive
\nat the same stop.
\nOnly we must take our own routes
\nto arrive.
\nOur ride is ever-new,
\nforging our way toward eternity —
\nthe momentless moment
\nand the light there will be a light
\nno ordinary dawn or day
\ncan approximate.
\nWe arrive in Heathrow in twelve minutes.
\nIn anticipation,
\nwe approximate our moments
